SB10-X single-use bioreactor

The Kuhner SB10-X is a compact orbital shaken single-use bioreactor designed for the cultivation of human, mammalian, plant, and other suspension cell cultures. With a working volume of 4–12 L (or 1.5–4.5 L using the optional 3 L vessel module), it is an ideal solution for research, process development, and pilot-scale bioprocessing.

Its orbital shaking technology provides gentle yet highly efficient mixing, ensuring excellent oxygen transfer while minimizing shear stress and foam formation. Disposable cultivation bags eliminate the need for cleaning and sterilization, reducing preparation time and contamination risk.

The SB10-X supports online monitoring and control of key process parameters, making it a reliable and scalable platform for modern cell culture applications.

The SB10-X combines the simplicity of single-use technology with the proven performance of Kuhner's orbital shaking platform. Disposable cultivation bags eliminate time-consuming cleaning and sterilization, while the gentle orbital motion provides efficient mixing and oxygen transfer with minimal shear stress, making it ideal for sensitive cell cultures and microcarrier applications.

The system is designed to simplify daily operation while delivering reliable, reproducible cultivation conditions from process development through pilot-scale production.

Key capabilities include:

  • Working volume of 4–12 L (standard) or 1.5–4.5 L with the optional 3 L vessel
  • Online monitoring and control of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO)
  • Integrated heating for accurate temperature control
  • Bubble-free surface aeration with low foam formation
  • Three disposable bag options, including perfusion configurations

Process Control

The SB10-X features a compact control unit with an intuitive 12-inch touchscreen running the Kuhner Insight software. Operators can easily monitor and control critical process parameters including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, shaking speed, gas flow, and gas composition. Three integrated peristaltic pumps enable automated feeding, pH adjustment, and media transfer, while the built-in FlowCon gas mixing system delivers precise mixtures of air, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen for stable cultivation conditions.

Designed for Easy Scale-Up

One of the major advantages of the SB10-X is its seamless scalability. The system bridges the gap between laboratory shake flasks and larger production bioreactors, allowing processes to be transferred with confidence thanks to consistent orbital shaking hydrodynamics. Cultures developed in the SB10-X can be directly scaled to the SB50-X and SB200-X, making it an excellent platform for research, process optimization, and pilot-scale manufacturing.
